Combat Basics: Pause, Phases, and the AI Cheat
Pillars of Eternity is a Real-Time with Pause (RTwP) game. The speed of combat is an illusion β every single fight on PotD is won or lost BEFORE damage happens. The three things every strong player does:
- Pause CONSTANTLY. Spacebar is your best friend. Fights at the highest difficulty break down into "pause β check positions β queue three actions β unpause 3 seconds β repeat".
- Scout first. Stealth (Ranger + Rogue + cloak) to pull enemy packs one group at a time. The #1 wipe cause on Hard/PotD is accidentally pulling three packs at once.
- Start fights with pre-buffs. 5 seconds before pulling, cast: Priest Crown of the Faithful β Wizard Arcane Veil β Chanter summon phrase β Paladin Zealous aura. If you pull first then buff, you've already lost 30% of HP.
AI Scaling Cheat You Need to Know
Enemy AI in Pillars 1 targets the LOWEST DEFLECTION character in engagement range. They do NOT target the highest threat like MMOs, they do NOT target closest. They literally run a loop on "which target currently has the lowest deflection?". Position your Wizard 6m back and stack deflection food on them. Tank must have the highest engagement range + highest deflection in the entire party.
Engagement Rules (Most Misunderstood Mechanic)
Engagement is the single most important mechanic. 80% of "why is my wizard dead?!" questions come from not understanding it:
| Concept | What it means | How to abuse it |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement (default) | Melee characters lock 1 enemy per target within 2m. If a locked character tries to run, they get a FREE disengagement hit (usually a crit-kill on casters). | Keep your casters >3m away from any engaged edge. |
| Engager count | Each character has a number of enemies they can simultaneously engage. Fighter gets 4 via Defender + Hold the Line. Most classes get 1. | Fighter with 4 engagements is literally a wall pinning an entire pack. |
| Disengagement hits | Automatic attack, no recovery, +50% damage, near 100% hit. Designed to punish pulling. | Never move a melee character away manually. Use Withdraw, Dangerous Implements on a weapon swap, or Smoke Veil (Rogue) to exit without penalty. |
| Disengagement exceptions | Teleport-style moves (Cipher Tenuous Grasp escape), Rogue's Escape, and items (Boots of Speed charge) do NOT trigger it. | Always have 1 disengage tool for squishies in your backline. |
Mistake #1: Re-positioning during combat
New players see their Wizard getting attacked, click-drag them 10 meters away. That wizard eats 1β4 disengagement hits (100+ damage each) and dies. The correct response is: Freeze. Pause. Order Eder the Fighter to use Clear Out on the melee pack pinning Wizard. Then, after Clear Out has repositioned them, move Wizard. No disengagement triggers because the enemies were CC'd during movement.
13 Damage Types Γ 6 Armor Types Matrix
Armor in Pillars 1 is NOT binary. It's damage type specific DR per armor layer. The worst players equip "highest DR number" armor and wonder why enemies take no damage. The correct approach is type matching:
| Damage Type | Weak to (good match) | Resist to (avoid these) | Best applied by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slash | Padded, Robe, Hide | Plate, Brigandine | Swords, Great Sword, Rogue Stiletto |
| Crush | Mail, Brigandine, Scale | Plate, Hide | Maces, Flails, Morningstars, Monk Torment |
| Pierce | Mail, Scale, Robe | Brigandine, Plate | Bows, Pikes, Spears, Stilettos |
| Burn | Non-flame enchanted ANY | Drake Scale, Flame-proofed | Druid Firebrand, Paladin Flames, Chanter Dragon |
| Freeze | Heavy armors (slow target) | White Forged items | Wizard Pillar of Frozen Souls |
| Shock (electric) | Mail/Metal (conductive) | Hide/Robe (insulating) | Druid Bolas, Cipher Mind Wave shock |
| Corrode | Leather (acid eats it) | Chrome plate (WM) | Wizard Miasma, Druid Rotten Maw |
| Raw | IGNORES ALL ARMOR | Immunity only (very rare) | Dragon Thrashed, Wounds of Eventide, Slicken Raw |
Raw Damage is the king of Patch 3.7. Any damage type that says "Raw" (not Corrode!) bypasses 100% of enemy DR. This is why Chanter Dragon Thrashed is so broken β every tick is Raw burn damage, not Burn damage. A Plate-armored Dragon takes full damage from Raw Dragon Thrashed and only 20% from a Slash sword.
14 Afflictions (Crowd Control Priority)
Every debuff in the game falls into 14 afflictions. Afflictions on enemy = Rogue triggers Sneak Attack. They also lower enemy stats and often define who wins fights. Win Condition order for PotD:
- PRONE (Tier 1) β Dexterity β8, Reflexes β25, Can NOT move. The #1 CC. Always go for prone first. Druid Relentless Storm, Fighter Mule Kick, Chanter Seven Nights She Waited.
- STUNNED (Tier 1) β Worse than prone but rare. Intellect β8, Deflection β35, Can NOT act.
- PARALYZED (Tier 1) β All defenses 0, hitβcrit conversion. Wizard Gaze of the Adragan. If you land this on a boss, the fight is over.
- CONFUSED / CHAMBERMAID (Tier 2) β Attack random targets. Chanter Not Felled by the Axe.
- WEAKENED (Tier 2) β Might β5, Concentration β10. Prevents casters from completing spells.
- SICKENED (Tier 2) β Constitution β5, Fortitude β15. Combo with damage spells.
- 7β14: Everything else (Terrified, Hobbled, Dazed, Frightened, Disoriented, Exhausted, Blinded, Charmed).
3 CC Combos That Beat Boss Fights in One Pull
- Prone Stacking (Mule Kick + Relentless Storm) β Fighter Mule Kicks boss β Druid Relentless Storm AoE prone lands β Boss never gets to cast any ability.
- Paralyze Lock β Wizard preps Gaze of the Adragan (70% hit after debuffs) β lands β everyone auto-attacks = 100% crit for the duration.
- Charm Confusion Chain β Cipher Whispers of Treason + Wizard Confusion β 40% of the enemy pack attacks each other. You only fight 60% of the HP.
Interrupts & Concentration
Casters and Chanters have cast/recover bars. Interrupting them before the bar finishes = wasted resources and zero effect. The system:
- Perception grants Interrupt (1 per point). DEX or Resolve does NOT.
- Concentration (Resolve + items) prevents being interrupted.
- Weapons with "Interrupt on 0.3s cooldown" (clubs, flails, quarterstaffs) interrupt more often than interrupt 0.5s swords.
- Final Check: Attacker Interrupt (weapon+PER) vs Target Concentration (RES + spells). Roll 1d100.
Best builds for perma-interrupting enemy casters: Monk (Swift Strikes + fast hits) or Dual-Wield Flail Fighter.
PotD Difficulty: 5 Encounter Tactic Patterns
Every fight in PotD falls into one of these patterns. Memorize the framework. You won't have time to think during the actual pull.
| Pattern | Recognize it by | Win Play |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Ambush / Surrounded | Spawn behind you + in front of you after conversation. | Pause instantly. Move Eder/Pallegina to CENTER (not edge). Cast CC at the larger group. If you lose positioning, it's a wipe. |
| 2. Skirmisher Ranged Pack | Many ranged (Xaurip Skirmishers, Archers) at 10m distance. | DO NOT send tank in alone. Move as a group, or send Chanter to summon skeletons ahead as decoys. Ranged packs melt to Wizard Fan of Flames + Confusion. |
| 3. Caster + Melee Guard | 1β2 high level casters (Concelhaut, Dragon Priests) + 4 melee guards. | Target casters first with interrupts. Assign 2 interrupt-focused characters (dual flails) to casters. Kill guards AFTER casters are silenced/CC'd. |
| 4. High HP Single Target Boss | 1 boss, no adds. HP bar 2x party combined HP. | Open with Divine Mark + Combusting Wounds on boss. Apply 1β2 DOTs (Firebrand, Raw Dragon aura) β Heart of Fury (Barbarian) if available. Stack afflictions for Rogue Deathblows. Bosses melt in 12 seconds of correct combos. |
| 5. 3 Waves Spawn Fight | Fight starts, then "Wave 2 Incoming" text at half HP, Wave 3 at 20%. | Hold all spells for wave 2. Only use at-will abilities on wave 1. Waste resources on wave 1 = you can't deal with wave 3 and wipe. |
Positioning: The 6-Man "T Formation"
The universal formation that works for 99% of encounters:
- Front Row (Tank Wall): Eder (Fighter) center, Pallegina (Paladin) right/left offset. Together they engage 5β6 enemies. NO ONE else is within 4 meters of the enemy.
- Mid-Row (AOE Casters): Kana (Chanter) center. Aloth (Wizard) 2m behind Kana. Aloth's AOEs will land on Eder's engagement bubble.
- Back-Row (DPS + Support): Sagani (Ranger) + Your Watcher (Cipher) + Durance/Priest in a triangle. Each separated by 1β2m so single-target AOEs hit only one.
Mistake #2: Stacking Party Into a Ball
Every single AOE in the game targets clusters. If you stand everyone within a 3-meter radius, one Slicken = entire party prone, one Confusion = entire party charms each other. 1β2m separation is non-negotiable even on Normal.
AI Scripting (No Micro = Win)
The game has AI condition scripts. You don't need to manually click every ability. Good scripts let you PotD with ~50% less stress. Top scripts to enable (per character):
- Eder (Tank): If enemy within 2m β use Disciplined Barrage; if ally HP < 30% β use Clear Out; if not engaged β use Charge.
- Wizard (Aloth): If enemies β₯3 in cluster β use Slicken/Fan of Flames/Confusion (cycle); if enemy HP < 10% β auto-attack (save spells).
- Chanter (Kana): Always chant Dragon Thrashed (disable auto-select on phrase completion).
- Priest (Durance): If ally HP < 25% β Barring Death's Door on them; Always β Crown of the Faithful at fight start.
Combat FAQ
Flanked penalty. If the tank has enemies on BOTH sides (front + back at 180Β°), they lose 10 Deflection. If they are prone + flanked + charmed at once? They hit β30 Deflection total and every single hit becomes a crit. Keep tanks against walls so back = no access.
Anything that deals Raw damage: Dragon Thrashed chant (Chanter), Wounds of Eventide (Cipher L9), Slicken upgrade "Raw Slicken" (Wizard spell upgrade), KarΕg's Tusk weapon's Raw on hit, Bleak Walkers Corrode damage, Durance staff of Magran, and the soulbound weapon Modwyr has Raw DoT unlock at Tier 4.
You are using direct healing spells (Heal Companion, Restore a Significant Portion) instead of Regeneration (DoT heal). Priest's Restore a Significant Portion is 1 use per target per 6s. The actual healing meta is: Chanter Blessing Was Invoked (1 phrase β every ally regenerates 220 HP over 15s), Druid Moonwell, and Priest Withdraw (pulls ally out of combat to free-heal 100%). Direct heal spells are for emergency Barring Death's Door.
